Toyota has built up a great reputation for building sturdy off-roading vehicles. Going all the way back to the original Land Cruiser, the Japanese automaker has consistently turned out trucks and SUVs that can more than hold their own when the tarmac comes to an end. Here’s an overview of Toyota’s best off-roading vehicles from its current lineup.

The Tundra got a full redesign for the 2022 model year, so there’s plenty of new styling and other features to check out in this full-sized pickup. Four-wheel drive is available throughout the Tundra’s lineup, but it comes standard with the TRD Pro trim. This is the best trim to choose if off-roading is your top priority, since it also features a front skid plate, 18-inch aluminum wheels, and Fox shocks.

You can get some off-roading features with other Tundra trims by opting for the TRD Off-Roading package. One benefit of this package is the multi-terrain driving system, which adjusts the Tundra to cope with mud, sand, and snow.

The Tundra’s all-new power train is led by a twin-turbocharged V-6 engine that puts out 389 horsepower. If you plan on towing or hauling heavy loads, this Toyota has you covered. It can tow up to 12,000 pounds and haul up to 1,940 pounds of cargo in its bed.

The Tundra’s two cab options offer you the choice of tailoring your truck to your personal needs. If you generally just have one front-seat passenger or kids riding in the back, the Double Cab should be fine for you. It seats up to five passengers, but the rear-row seats are more compact. If you want adults or older children to ride in the rear row during your off-roading adventures, the CrewMax cab will be your best choice. It also seats five, but the rear seats are more spacious.

The Tundra boasts a wide range of infotainment features. You can opt for a whopping 14-inch entertainment screen and a 12-speaker premium stereo. A wireless hotspot comes standard so you can stay connected wherever your off-roading trips take you.

Toyota Tacoma

If you don’t need the extra space offered by the Tundra, the Toyota Tacoma is a compact pickup with great off-roading capabilities. For the best off-roading performance, you’ll want to go for the TRD Off-Road or TRD Pro trims, which come equipped with many standard off-roading features.

Both the TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro trims are powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that puts out 278 horsepower. The TRD trims also offer an optional six-speed manual transmission, which comes with a crawl control. In the Tacoma TRD Off-Road, you get an improved off-roading suspension, a locking rear differential, and shock absorbers.

If you opt for the range-topping TRD Pro trim, you get a terrain monitor that can adjust the driving performance depending on the type of surface you’re on. You also get LED fog lights and a skid plate.

Two cab options are available in the Tacoma. If you only need to accommodate four people, you can choose the Access cab. For an additional seat, the Double Cab has space for five passengers. In terms of the cargo bed options, there’s a longer one measuring 6 feet, 1 inch in length and a more compact version measuring 5 feet.

Toyota 4Runner

The 4Runner is a mid-sized SUV that stands out on rough terrain. With 9.6 inches of ground clearance and a truck-based suspension, it will handle many trails with ease and even tackle large obstacles.

Under the hood, the 4Runner is powered by a V-6 engine that puts out 270 horsepower. The power train also includes a five-speed automatic transmission and standard rear-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive is an optional upgrade in some trims, but you can get it standard if you opt for the TRD Off-Road or Off-Road Premium trims.

A skid plate comes standard throughout the 4Runner’s lineup. However, the off-road trims feature additional skid plates, locking rear differential, and crawl control. An improved dynamic suspension system is also on offer.

The 4Runner boasts plenty of passenger space and cargo-carrying capacity for you to take your family or friends off-roading. In its two-row configuration, this SUV has roomy seating for up to five people and over 47 cubic feet of storage at the rear. Some trims offer an optional third row of seats that increase the passenger capacity to seven.

Toyota Sequoia

The Sequoia is more than capable of handling mild off-roading. It has a 10-inch ground clearance, which is impressive for a large SUV. Add to that the standard four-wheel drive that’s offered in the TRD Pro trim and you’ve got the main ingredients for a solid off-roader.

This large SUV is powered by a 5.7-liter V-8 engine that’s good for 381 horsepower. Additional available off-roading features include a two-speed transfer case, a skid plate, and a center locking differential.

One advantage the Sequoia has over Toyota’s other off-roading vehicles is its passenger-carrying capacity. Large families will love its maximum capacity of eight passengers. Adult-friendly seating is on offer in all three rows, and you still have over 18 cubic feet at the rear for carrying cargo. In addition, the Sequoia can tow up to 7,400 pounds.
