Which Toyota Sedans Have AWD?

January 19th, 2022 by

All-wheel drive (AWD) vehicles continue their rapid growth in popularity. According to market research from JATO Dynamics, slightly more than half of all cars sold in the United States in 2020 rested on AWD drivetrains. That number is up more than 10 percentage points in a short five years, with 2020 marking the first time that AWD vehicles made up the majority of the U.S. car market.

Toyota has long recognized the value of all-wheel drive. Equally distributed power means more traction on wet roads, greater pickup on hills, and, sometimes, a better experience for off-road adventures. Powertrain choices abound in the Toyota lineup. If you are in the market for a family car, you might be wondering: Which Toyota sedans have all-wheel drive? The team at Performance Toyota of Cincinnati outlines the answer below, with a summary of the specs, features, and fuel economy for each.

Toyota Camry

The legendary Toyota Camry sedan is, in the words of Toyota, the “cure for the common commute.” It even offers options for those who like the balance of all-wheel-drive. The Camry’s available AWD system has smart features that know when to send power to the rear wheels as the surface below changes.

Price

The 2022 Camry line starts with the Camry LE and includes 12 additional trim choices ranging in price from $25,295 for the Camry LE to $35,720 for the Camry XSE V6. The Camry is also available as a hybrid, offering both a gas and electric engine for maximum fuel efficiency.

Feature Highlights

Depending on the car you choose, you will select from a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder and or 3.5-liter V6 gas engine. All Camry models come with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+, an industry-leading package of driver assistance technologies that includes emergency braking, lane departure warning, and a pre-collision system alert. The car’s intelligence also knows went to trigger the high beams, while road-sign assist keeps you within speed limits.

Technology features include a 10-inch color head-up display (HUD) on the windshield for instrumentation and a 9-inch center console display screen for information and entertainment. Connect your mobile phone to the infotainment system using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Fuel Efficiency

Because the Camry has a hybrid option, fuel economy depends on the model you choose. The Hybrid Camry generates a combined 52 mpg. Gasoline-only versions of the Camry have lower mpg estimates but will still keep you from visiting the gas pump too often. The Camry LE, for instance, provides a combined 32 mpg, according to EPA estimates.

Toyota Prius

Your other option for all-wheel-drive in a sedan will be the Toyota Prius, which has made history as one of the world’s best-selling hybrid vehicles. The 2022 Prius goes by the name Prius Prime and continues to offer what Toyota describes as the best of both worlds: excellent fuel efficiency in a gas engine with the flexibility and eco-consciousness of electric charging.

The Prius Prime offers drivers the option of building their car using electric all-wheel drive, or AWD-e. In the Prius, the AWD system kicks in only when you need it to, through a small electric motor in the back of the car that powers the rear wheels. The AWD-e feature is available as an option in the Prius LE, Prius XLE, and Prius Nightshade Editions.

Price

The Prius Prime LE and Prime XLE and Nightshade AWD-e-versions fall in the middle of the cost scale. The Prime LE sells for a suggested $28,130, while the Prime XLE lists for $30,570. The Nightshade Edition falls just between, with a suggested retail price of $30,470.

Feature Highlights

In the Prius lineup, the AWD-e versions offer Toyota Audio Plus, which revolves around a 7-inch touch screen with Android Auto and Apple Car Play integration, as well as Amazon Alexa compatibility. The Prius comes with a one-year trial of Toyota Safety Connect.

The Prius AWD-e models are all outfitted with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, the company’s package of safety features including pre-collision with pedestrian detection alert, lane departure alert with steering assistance, lane tracing assistance, automatic high beams, dynamic cruise control, and roadside assistance. The Prius vehicles put out about 96 horsepower at 5,200 RPM.

The rear legroom in the Prius can easily accommodate two additional adults. The Prius models are covered by a 3-year/36,000-mile limited warranty as well as an 8-year/100,000-mile warranty covering the hybrid components.

Fuel Efficiency

Miles per gallon performance varies from car to car, in part because of your driving style. But you will appreciate the efficiency numbers you get from the Prius. According to EPA estimates, you will get a combined 49 mpg from the AWD-e drivetrain across the three trim options.

Other All-Wheel Drive Choices

Toyota customers can get the benefits of all-wheel drive across other vehicle categories, too. You will find AWD options in sport-utility vehicles such as the Toyota Highlander, Sequoia, 4Runner, and RAV4, as well as the Toyota Tundra and Tacoma trucks and the Sienna minivan.
