Toyota Camry vs Avalon

The Toyota Camry and Avalon should be top of your list if you need a sedan for your daily commutes in and around Cincinnati. The larger Avalon could be ideal if you want some extra cargo space, but the Camry will do just fine if fuel economy and price are your priority.

Overview

The 2022 Camry is a mid-sized sedan that seats five people. Its base trim features cloth upholstery and has an MSRP of a little over $25,000. Under its hood is a four-cylinder engine that provides plenty of power for your trips, long or short.

The Camry is available in several trims for the 2022 model year, allowing you to configure your cabin or upgrade to a more powerful engine. You can also opt for the Camry Hybrid for even better gas mileage.

Similarly, the 2022 Avalon, a larger sedan than the Camry, is a five-seater. Its standard configuration boasts synthetic leather upholstery and heated front seats. The vehicle’s starting MSRP is around $36,000. It is powered by a V-6 engine and offers impressive fuel efficiency for a car its size.

The Avalon also has various trims, including a hybrid: Avalon Hybrid.

Engine and Fuel Efficiency

The Avalon’s engine is a 3.5-liter V-6 that churns out 301 horsepower and is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Thanks to this powertrain, the vehicle can go from zero to 60 mph in about 6 seconds. Gasoline-powered Avalon also achieves 31 mpg on the highway and 22 mpg in the city.

Also, the Avalon Hybrid, which partly uses an alternative power source, runs on a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors, both of which generate a combined 215 horsepower. The gas mileage is remarkable for this massive hybrid: 43 mpg on the open road and 44 mpg in traffic.

In contrast, the standard unit in the Camry is a four-cylinder engine that delivers 204 horsepower. Though as you move up the trim, there is the optional V-6, the same one that powers the Avalon. All 2022 Camry trims running on the base engine and in front-wheel-drive configuration get 28 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway. The fuel efficiency will drop slightly to 25 mpg and 34 mpg in the city and on the highway, respectively, in any Camry in an all-wheel-drive layout, though you can expect better overall performance as compensation. Fuel efficiency for the V-6-powered Camry is similar to the Avalon’s.

The Camry Hybrid’s powertrain is made up of a four-cylinder engine and a single electric motor that combine to produce 208 horsepower. This hybrid trim attains 51 mpg in the city and 53 mpg on the highway.

Exterior Appearance

The Camry has a sporty outline, with an angular front end and black-out hood. An optional rear spoiler with a red accent along the fender accentuates the sedan’s contemporary design.

Conversely, the Avalon’s profile is more upscale. It wears flowing body lines and a black mesh grille at the front. In the Nightshade Edition, you can add black-on-black design features to amplify its already charming appearance.

Interior Features

We accessed the Camry’s interior to assess its practicality and niceties. Well, we liked what we saw and felt. Its cabin includes a 15.1 cubic feet trunk, enough to hold a large grocery purchase or two large suitcases. Both rows of seats provide ample room for adult passengers. In the rear row, you’ll find two sets of LATCH connectors on the side seats and a tether anchor in the middle for installing child seating.

The Avalon is no less practical or remarkable. In comparison, it has over 16 cubic feet of storage space in its trunk. You can also fold down the rear seats if you need to carry longer items. And whenever the rear row is in use like that, there’s still enough legroom for adult passengers to stretch out and relax. In addition, the Avalon includes the same equipment as the Camry for installing kids’ seats in the rear row.

Technology

There’s little to choose between the Avalon and Camry when it comes to infotainment since both vehicles are equipped with top-notch technology. The Avalon gets a 9-inch infotainment screen and an eight-speaker stereo in its base setup. While the Camry has a 7-inch screen, you can upgrade to the larger one in its advanced trims.

Both sedans are equipped with extensive connectivity options, such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, BlueTooth, and Amazon Alexa. Each model is also available with several convenient upgrades, like a navigation system, wireless phone charging, and premium stereos.

Safety technology is equally abundant across the lineup of both the 2022 Camry and the 2022 Avalon. Driver assistance features, including collision warning and automatic emergency braking, are part of Toyota Sense 2.5+, a suite of safety aids to protect you and your passengers on the road.

Trims and Pricing

The Avalon’s MSRP in the base XLE trim is $36,375. The other two trims on offer are Touring and Limited. The Touring adds additional comfort to the cabin with ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel. The Limited tops this off with genuine leather upholstery instead of the synthetic leather in the lower two trims.

On the other hand, you can pick from five trims with the Camry: LE, SE, XLE, XSE, and TRD. The MSRP for the base trim is $25,295, which is over $11,000 less than the Avalon’s base MSRP.  Expect synthetic leather upholstery when you step up to the SE trim or genuine leather if you go with the XLE. The latter is the first trim level to offer an optional upgrade to the V-6 engine, which comes standard in the range-topping TRD.

Our comparison shows that both rides are excellent in their own rights and have their strengths. For premium comfort and style, the Avalon is probably what we’d recommend. But if you prefer a sporty, fuel-efficient automobile that is affordable, the 2022 Camry could be just right.
