2023 Toyota 4Runner vs. Highlander

November 4th, 2022 by

At first, it may seem strange to pit the 2023 Toyota 4Runner against the 2023 Toyota Highlander, but this all makes sense when you realize that these two SUVs are built for very different needs and preferences. While the Highlander is the ideal everyday option that happens to do well on a number of urban terrains, the 4Runner is that weekend favorite that takes you through the peaks and valleys of the road less traveled.

Trims

Both the 4Runner and Highlander want drivers to have plenty of options in terms of trims. On the 4Runner side, there are eight trims: the SR5, TRD Sport, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, 40th Anniversary Special Edition, Limited, and the TRD Pro. The SR5 is the base model and has a starting MSRP of $38,805. The top trim offered is the TRD Pro, which has a starting MSRP of $53,270. All the trims offer fuel efficiency of 16 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway.

The Highlander bumps up the number of trims to 11 options, including five hybrid models. The trim options are the L, LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, Platinum, Hybrid LE, Hybrid XLE, Bronze Edition, Hybrid Limited, and Hybrid Platinum. The L trim is the base model and has a starting MSRP of $36,420, while the top-of-the-range Hybrid Platinum starts around $50,475. Highlander promises great fuel efficiency even on the non-hybrid options, with 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the open road. With the hybrid models, this jumps to 36 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. If you have questions about how the 4Runner compares to the Highlander, click the button below to give us a call. Engine and Drivetrain Options

Performance is an important factor, especially when buying an SUV as you need that power to navigate tough, hilly terrain.

The 4Runner has a 4.0-liter V-6 that pushes 270 hp and offers 4×2 and 4×4 drivetrain options. On the 4Runner Limited, there’s also full-time four-wheel drive, whereas the other trims have part-time four-wheel drive.

The Highlander engine options are a 2.5-liter L4HV ECVT hybrid engine that gets you 243 combined net hp. There’s also the 2.4-liter four-cylinder turbo 8AT engine. Drivetrain options include front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

Exterior Design Elements

It goes without saying that some of the trims add something spicy on the outside, and both the 4Runner and Highlander have something special to add.

The 4Runner TRD Pro offers a tough and rugged exterior with a unique Solar Octane paint color. On the Limited grade, there are 20-inch wheels and chrome body accents to enhance that luxe look. The TRD Sport also has something extra with its impressive grille, hood scoop, and color-keyed body trim. All the trims offer LED headlights and fog lights.

On the Highlander, there are a few extra touches such as the power-folding mirrors and the hands-free power liftgate. The XSE model features a chrome-plated twin-tip exhaust. There are also 20-inch alloy wheels on the XSE, Limited, and Platinum trims. LED headlights are standard across the range.

Interior Design

A car’s interior can quickly turn an average trip into a great trip simply by offering a few added extras.

Some design elements on the 4Runner bound to make your day, include the power tilt and slide moonroof. The heated and ventilated front leather-trimmed seats are a great addition for any weather. That said, the TRD Sport offers its unique SofTex-trimmed seats and TRD-embroidered headrests. In terms of convenience, there are three USB ports, with one in the front row and two in the second row. The Limited trim brings a luxurious element to the table with its wood-inspired accents.

The third-row seating in the Highlander places this SUV in a category of its own. It also offers a panoramic moonroof with a power-retractable sunshade. It also has the Qi wireless charging pad for added convenience and a 12.3-inch fully digital gauge cluster, which provides all the information drivers need in an instant. Heated and ventilated leather front seats add to the comfort level, especially on long, hot drives. The XSE offers a two-tone red and black leather interior for that little something extra.

Technology

Technology is a deciding factor when it comes to choosing a car nowadays and Toyota brings some pretty neat features to the table.

Compatibility is key in the 4Runner and its 8-inch touch-screen display is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It offers Toyota’s Smart Key system and push-button start, which means you no longer need to fish your keys out of your bag. The dual-zone automatic climate control adds a layer of comfort for both the driver and front passenger. In terms of entertainment, there’s a 15-speaker JBL sound system that includes an amplifier and subwoofer, plus the three-month SiriusXM Platinum plan trial. There’s also Wi-Fi connect, which allows you to turn your car into a Wi-Fi hot spot for up to five devices.

The Highlander is a convenience treasure trove and features five USB ports and two 12-volt outlets. A 12.3-inch audio multimedia display is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Safety Features

Toyota is known to incorporate some of its top safety features across all trims to ensure drivers and passengers experience high safety standards. The Star Safety System is one of them and includes features such as vehicle stability control, traction control, anti-lock brake system, brake assist, and electronic brake-force distribution.

The 4Runner has a blind spot monitor with rear cross traffic alert and backup camera, which helps when you’re getting out of a tight parking spot. This range also offers eight standard air bags. The Remote Connect feature ensures that automated gates and doors open as you approach your property.

In addition to the safety features of the 4Runner, the Highlander adds a few extras. These include a full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control for highway use. There’s also the lane departure alert with steering assist and lane tracing assist to keep you steady on your path. Road sign assist alerts you to potential changes on your journey.
