Best Toyota Cars by MPG

August 18th, 2022 by

In these climate-sensitive times, fuel efficiency has emerged as arguably the most important factor for today’s car buyers. The good news is that the technology shift towards electric and hybrid cars affords car buyers choices they never had before, with miles-per-gallon ratings that once seemed the province of science fiction.

Toyota helped trigger the revolution with its renowned hybrid Prius vehicles and is continuing to lead the way in fuel efficiency both in hybrid, electric, and traditional fuel vehicles. As you consider your options, you might be wondering: What are the best Toyota cars by gas mileage? The sales and service teams at Performance Toyota, serving Cincinnati, Colerain, Dayton, Fairfield, Hamilton, as well as areas in northern Kentucky and southeastern Indiana, have put together this list of the most fuel-efficient models in the Toyota lineup. Most Fuel-Efficient Hybrid Toyota Models

The breakthrough of a hybrid electric/gas engine changed everything in the automobile industry. Toyota was a pioneer, and it continues to innovate. But if fuel efficiency is far and away your most important factor, then here are the models for you.

Toyota Prius Prime

Building on the legacy of this historic car, the Toyota Prius Prime offers new levels of flexibility in fuel efficiency with a no-gas electric vehicle mode in addition to the gas/electric mode for longer trips. The EV-only mode will provide 25 miles to a charge, long enough to get you to work and maybe even back, and without a single emission. Since the engine charges fully in two hours, you could plug in at work and restore the full 25-mile range for the ride home.

In the hybrid model, ideal for longer trips, the Prius Prime Plus delivers exceptional gas mileage. According to EPA estimates, the Prius Prime delivers 55 mpg on the highway and 53 mpg in city driving for a combined rating of 54 mpg. The Prius Prime is a four-door sedan that comfortably seats five and has room to spare for your luggage and other cargo in the hatchback.

Toyota Mirai

The new Toyota Mirai is a four-door sedan that offers yet another form of breakthrough fuel efficiency technology. The car operates on a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle engine, which is likely to make the traditional gas pumps feel a little lonely. On a single fill, the Toyota Mirai produces 76 mpg in highway driving and 71 mpg in city driving for a combined rating of 74 mpg, according to EPA estimates. The car has a range of 350 miles to 400 miles—but in one controlled experiment went more than 840 miles on a single tank of hydrogen. The Mirai is a four-door sedan that seats up to five people.

Toyota Prius

The legacy Toyota Prius delivers its own punch when it comes to fuel efficiency, even without the all-EV mode of the Prius Prime Plus. The revered and best-selling Prius delivers 58 mpg in highway driving and 53 mpg in city driving for a combined rating of 56 mpg.

Prius’ XE and SLE models get a little less out of the engine, but still register an impressive 54 mpg in highway driving and 50 mpg in city driving for a combined 53 mpg. Prius is a four-door sedan with room for up to five people as well as luggage and cargo in the trunk area covering up to 50.7 cubic feet of space.

Toyota Corolla Hybrid

Perhaps you’re a loyalist and devoted to the famed Corolla or need a little bit less space. The Toyota Corolla Hybrid also ranks high on the list of top fuel-efficient models in the Toyota line.

According to EPA estimates, the Corolla Hybrid generates 53 mpg in city driving and 52 mpg on the highway for a combined EPA rating of 52 mpg. You can fit up to five people—snugly—into your Corolla and still have room for luggage or other items to carry to the beach or on vacation.

Most Fuel-Efficient Legacy Toyota Models

The exciting thing about the transition to hybrid and electric technology is that, at least for now, it’s not an either-or proposition. So if you’re not quite ready to adjust to the new world of hybrid or electric driving, you can still choose a traditional fuel vehicle. And Toyota models are among the most fuel-efficient. Here are a few for you to consider:

  • Toyota Corolla: One of the best-selling sedans of all time, the 2022 Toyota Corolla will help you fend off high gas prices. The Corolla XSE and XSE Apex trims, both with 2.0-liter four-cylinder continuous variable transmission, register 40 mpg in highway driving and 31 mpg in city driving for a combined EPA rating of 34 mpg.
  • Toyota Camry: A next level up in luxury from the Corolla, the Camry provides either 33 mpg or 34 mpg on the highway and 22 mpg or 25 mpg in city driving depending on the trim. Combined EPA ratings range at either 26, 28, or 29 mpg. (The Camry comes in a hybrid model that runs for a combined 52 mpg.)
  • Toyota RAV4: One of Toyota’s best-selling crossover SUV models, the RAV4 will also keep you out on the road and away from the gas pumps. The RAV4 delivers 35 mpg on the highway and 27 mpg in city driving for a combined rating of 30 mpg. The RAV4 is also available as a hybrid.
