What You Need to Know About the 4Runner Interior Re-Design for 2023
Unlike many other modern crossover vehicles, the Toyota 4Runner isn’t a car-based SUV that’s designed to look like a truck. Since 1984, Toyota has made the 4Runner just as capable off-road as it is on the road. The 4Runner’s truck-based chassis and quality suspension make it a reliable and safe ride for lone drivers and families, no matter the type of terrain. The latest iteration of the 4Runner is no different. Plus, its newly redesigned interior makes the 4Runner more stylish and comfortable than ever.

In addition to its consistent performance, the 2023 4Runner has a spacious and modern interior, making it ideal for both your daily commute and long road trips. As one of the roomiest models in its class, Toyota has seemingly tailored the 4Runner for taller folks while ensuring it’s also comfortable for those who are a little bit shorter.
With its sleek and easy-to-use dashboard and infotainment system, the 2023 4Runner has all the modern amenities drivers have come to expect, with a few added surprises. Five distinct trims also give you a wide variety of styles and features to select from.
Available Seating Capacity
Most 2023 4Runner models seat five passengers, but there are a few seven-seat configurations for families or frequent carpoolers. As previously mentioned, the 4Runner is pretty roomy; it fits everyone comfortably, even when you use the optional third row. Additionally, thanks to its squared-off shape and windows, passengers in the second or third row have excellent visibility, making it the perfect vehicle for sightseeing.
These second- and third-row seats allow you to configure your 4Runner to best suit your needs for any given journey. The second row has an available 40/20/40 split with seats that you can fold flat and recline. Similarly, it has 50/50 fold-flat seats in the third row.
Several 4Runner trims also have available heated and ventilated front leather seats. This optional feature will keep you and your front passenger warm or cool, depending on the climate you’re traversing so no matter the weather, you can stay cozy inside.
Dashboard and Infotainment System
The Toyota 4Runner features a straightforward dashboard and a standard 8-inch touch-screen infotainment system. With clear graphics and plenty of fixed shortcut buttons, the 4Runner’s tech is easy to use, even when you’re on the go. Plus, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, you can get navigation, play music, make calls, and send and receive messages hands-free.
There’s an available JBL audio system to help you get the most from your infotainment system. This system has a whopping 15 speakers, including an amplifier and subwoofer. Through JBL’s outstanding quality, your music, podcasts, and audiobooks will sound better than ever.
Also available is a Panoramic View Monitor (PVM). Using the cameras on the front, sides, and rear of your 4Runner, the PVM delivers a 360-degree view to your infotainment system so you’ll always know what’s happening outside your vehicle.
If you want your SUV’s style to match its capabilities, you can also opt for the 4Runner Limited. This model features wood-inspired accents throughout the interior to give your 4Runner a sleek design that will impress all of your passengers.
Cargo Space
One of the 4Runner’s greatest attributes is its massive 47.2 cubic feet of cargo space. With the fold-flat second-row seating, you can create up to 88.8 cubic feet of cargo space. Even if you add the available slide-out cargo floor, which slightly reduces the 4Runner’s capacity, there’s still plenty of room for all your luggage or camping equipment for weekends away or trips around Ohio.
For shorter individuals, this optional pull-out cargo deck may serve you well. Toyota designed this to make your things, especially heavier items, more accessible so it’s easier to unload them. While this deck reduces the height of the cargo hold by a few inches, according to Car and Driver, you can still fit 14 carry-on bags behind the second row when you have the pull-out cargo deck in use.
Finally, the SUV’s signature power rear window is a staple across all generations of the 4Runner. This standard feature allows you to raise and lower your rear window with the push of a single button. Loading and unloading will never be easier. Due to both the flexibility of this cargo space and the numerous deep cubbies in the front row, the 4Runner is as capable a hauler as it is an off-roader.
Other Features
If you live in the Cincinnati area, you likely know the agony of gripping a frozen steering wheel during winter. Luckily, most models of the 4Runner have an available heated steering wheel to keep you warm, even during the worst winter days. To help further, the 4Runner’s interior features include dual-zone automatic climate control with second-row vents, meaning you and your passengers can keep cool in the summer and warm during the winter.
The 4Runner also has enough power outlets and USB ports for your entire family or group of friends. These outlets include two 12-volt DC auxiliary power outlets (one in the front and one in the cargo area), three USB ports (one in the front row and two in the second row), and a 120-volt 100/400-watt AC power outlet in the cargo area.
Additionally, if you’re a frequent night driver, the 4Runner has an available auto-dimming rearview mirror so that you won’t get blinded during your nighttime travels. Finally, for those who want to optimize their sun exposure and soak up all the sights, the 2023 4Runner has an available power tilt/slide moonroof. This means that you and your passengers can get up close and personal with nature without leaving your seat.
