Both the 2022 Toyota Camry and 2022 Toyota Corolla are available in a range of well-equipped trim levels. The smaller Corolla sedan comes in five main trims, which are L, LE, XLE, SE, and XSE. From the outside, both models show off eye-catching styling features. The Camry comes standard with 17-inch wheels, LED front lighting, and a bold front grille. Additional options, offered on the higher trims, include larger wheels, unique trim elements, a trunk-mounted spoiler, and dual exhaust. You can also outfit this sedan with sporty upgrades like a glossy-black grille, aerodynamic body trim, and a sport exhaust, offered on the top TRD trim.

On the other hand, the Corolla looks a little sportier across all trim levels. The body style features rounded curves and sleek styling, thanks to a full redesign that happened a few years ago. This model is also available with a hatchback body style if you prefer that look. Standard equipment on the base trim includes 15-inch steel wheels and LED headlights, while options include heated mirrors, upgraded lighting, larger alloy wheels, and sporty trim elements. The SE Nightshade trim features blacked-out exterior trim with matching 18-inch black alloy wheels.

Size Differences

One of the main differences between the Camry and Corolla is the size. The Camry is a midsize sedan, while the Corolla fits in the compact sedan segment. This translates to a 10-inch length difference, as the Corolla is about 182 inches long and the Camry comes in at 192.7 inches. The Camry is 72.4 inches wide and has a 111-inch wheelbase, while the Corolla is 70 inches in width and has a 106-inch wheelbase.

If you need more interior space, the Camry will be a better option. The front row delivers 38 inches of headroom up front and 37.6 inches in the rear, plus 42 inches of legroom in the front and 38 inches in the back. The Corolla offers similar headroom and legroom in the front, but the rear comes in at 37.3 inches of headroom and 34.8 inches of legroom.

Fuel Efficiency and Power

Beneath the hood of the Corolla, you’ll find an efficient 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 139 horsepower and 126 pound-feet of torque. It works with a continuously variable transmission that sends power to the front wheels. EPA fuel economy estimates come in at 30 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway, or 33 mpg combined. If you choose the hybrid option, it comes with the same gas-powered engine paired with an electric motor. It produces a combined output of 121 horsepower and returns an estimated 53 mpg in the city and 52 mpg on the highway.

Most Camry models come standard with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. This unit works with an eight-speed automatic transmission that powers the front wheels, although it’s available with an upgrade to all-wheel drive. This is one area in which the Camry stands out as the Corolla is only available with front-wheel drive. With this engine, the Camry comes in at 28 mpg in the city, 39 mpg on the highway, and 32 mpg combined.

If you want more power, choose the TRD trim to get a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that pumps out 301 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. You can also add it to the XSE and XLE trim levels as an option. This unit returns an estimated 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway, or 25 mpg combined.

The Camry is also available with a fuel-efficient hybrid powertrain. It uses the same four-cylinder engine as the standard Camry models, paired with an electric motor to produce a combined output of 208 horsepower. The base LE trim returns an estimated 52 mpg combined, while the others come in at 46 mpg combined.

Interior Features

As mentioned, the Camry is a bit larger than the Corolla, so it offers a more spacious cabin. Standard interior features include cloth upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 7-inch touch screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration. You can also get options like simulated or real leather upholstery, heated front seats, rear air vents, and a heated steering wheel. On the tech side, additional features include an upgraded audio system, wireless device charging, and a larger 9-inch touch screen.

The cabin of the base Corolla trim is similarly equipped to the Camry, boasting Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration, dual USB ports, cloth upholstery, and a 7-inch touch screen. Additional luxury features offered on the higher trims include heated and power-adjustable front seats, upgraded cloth or leather upholstery, and a premium JBL audio system.

On the safety side, both the 2022 Camry and Corolla come with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, a powerful suite of driver aids. The package bundles a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane-tracing assist, lane departure alert with steering assist, and automatic high beams. You can also outfit either model with blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, while the Camry is offered with a bird’s-eye-view camera.
